A Fantasia International Film Festival Review
It’s weird to say, but “For the Sake of Vicious” might have been made just for the sake of being viciousness, and that isn’t a bad thing. Romina (Lora Burke) is a nurse that’s just finished her shift at the hospital. She heads home with hopes of later picking up her son to go trick or treating on Halloween night. However the trick is on her when she comes home to a stranger in her house. The two struggle before Chris (Nick Smyth) makes it clear he’s not there to hurt her.
So why is he there? He wants her to save Alan (Colin Paradine), who he’s brought with him after apparently beating him up. Chris is convinced Alan is the man who raped his daughter, and he wants Alan to admit it so he can serve some justice. As the three get to know each other a little more and argue over Alan’s guilt, they have no idea the world of hurt that’s coming to them. A gang of masked intruders shows up with bad intentions on their minds.
Like the movie, lets start with the three main characters. Chris and Alan know each other through bad circumstances, but Romina has run into Chris at the hospital before. The more they argue, the more complicated their situation seems to get. Chris is convinced of Alan’s guilt, Alan just wants to call his kids, and Romina is the peacemaker. Just as the audience might be picking a side, some guys come to the door that changes their dynamic.
The threesome must go from fighting each other to fighting off these masked men. The few moments of brief fighting between the three early on seems kind of rough. However that’s child’s play for what comes next. The second half of the film is a battle royal fight for survival. The audience is brought up close to the action so that they can get a good look at things. The characters let the audience know they’re in pain as opposed to some action movies where characters act invincible. There are some gruesome deaths, and plenty of brutal blows to go around. Supposedly the actors did all their own stunts which is amazing and a huge credit to them for pulling it off.
“For the Sake of Vicious” is an interesting mix of a revenge story, and a home invasion style movie. At first it might seem Chris in the home invader, but he’s just looking for help getting revenge on Alan in Romina’s house. Before the three know it, the true home invasion begins. The fighting is fierce, hard hitting, bloody, and all very real looking. The audience will share their pain, and desperation to live with a terrific score to go along with the madness. Credit everyone on the film for living up to the title, and making this a truly vicious movie. With that, I give it 4 pools of blood!
