V/H/S/94 REVIEW

A police S.W.A.T. team investigates about a mysterious VHS tape and discovers a sinister cult that has pre-recorded material which uncovers a nightmarish conspiracy. Starring: Anna Hopkins, Steven McCarthy, and Sean Patrick Dolan Directed by: Simon Barrett, Chloe Okuno, Ryan Prows, Jennifer Reeder, and Timo Tjahjanto Written by: Simon Barrett, Chloe Okuno, Ryan Prows, Jennifer Reeder, Timo Tjahjanto, and David Bruckner   The days of the VHS are pretty much gone, but the VHS franchise still has some life in it bringing horror fans “V/H/S/94.” Similar to the other entries in the series, a group of directors/writers team up to each contribute a short film that makes up this anthology. This one brings in some new faces along with some who have worked on some of the previous movies. All with the experience to create some good horror, and raising the expectations for this chapter of the franchise.   The movie starts with the wraparound story of a S.W.A.T. team converging on a...

SEANCE REVIEW

Camille Meadows is the new girl at the prestigious Edelvine Academy for Girls. Soon after her arrival, six girls invite her to join them in a late-night ritual, calling forth the spirit of a dead former student who reportedly haunts their halls. But before morning, one of the girls is dead, leaving the others wondering what they may have awakened. Starring: Suki Waterhouse, Madisen Beaty, Ella-Rae Smith, Inanna Sarkis, Seamus Patterson and Marina Stephenson-Kerr Directed and written by: Simon Barrett       You never know what you’ll conjure up once a “Seance” begins. The film opens with a seance in a dorm room amongst a group of girls, and it leaves one of them shaken up. The others think they just pulled off another one of their scary pranks, and are enjoying the success of it. Upon running back to her room things go from tears of joy to tears of sadness when she ends up dead.    This opens the door for Camille (Suki Waterhouse) to be ac...

BLAIR WITCH REVIEW

After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his sister's experiences in the demonic woods of the Blair Witch, James and a group of friends head to the forest in search of his lost sibling. Starring: James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Corbin Reid, Brandon Scott, Wes Robinson, and Valorie Curry Directed by: Adam Wingard Written by: Simon Barrett   Lionsgate originally entitled this movie “The Woods,” which seemed intriguing enough. Then they surprised horror fans changing the name to “Blair Witch,” and let everyone know this is a sequel to the 1999 “The Blair Witch Project.” This sent a buzz through the horror community, and instantly made this one of the most anticipated horror films of the year. So does it live up to the hype?   Much of the beginning to middle of the film is complete story set up. It provides a few chuckles, but is mostly boring. The audience is presented camera view after camera view from all the characters, and i...

YOU'RE NEXT REVIEW

When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped... until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all. Starring: Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, Rob Moran, and Barbara Crampton Director: Adam Wingard Writer: Simon Barrett     "You're Next" is next in a growing line of home invasion themed horror movies. It starts off with the typical token death of some unimportant characters. They waste little time making use of the phrase 'You're Next,' as it’s written on a sliding glass window. The scene ends with the splattering of some pretty fake looking blood leading me to believe this was going to be a long movie.   From there the audience is introduced to the wealthy Davison family, as they begin to show up to their vacation house little by little. Apparently it has been a while since Paul (Rob Moran) a...

V/H/S/2 REVIEW

Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find a collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student’s disappearance. Starring: Lawrence Michael Levine, and Kelsy Abbott Directed by: Simon Barrett, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Gregg Hale, Eduardo Sanchez, Timo Tjahjanto, and Adam Wingard Written by: Timo Tjahjanto, Brad Miska, Simon Barrett, John Davies, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Jamie Nash, and Eduardo Sanchez   To start off, it’s surprising that V/H/S/2 was made because V/H/S wasn’t that great. It has its moments here and there, but nothing stands out about it. The worse thing about it is the story that sets up the viewing of the cassettes. It didn’t seem to make sense, nor be a good reason for the cassettes to be shown.   With that being said, obviously the first thing that needs improvement on in the sequel is the set up s...
