Cursed Films is a five part documentary series which explores the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood’s notoriously cursed horror film productions.
Starring: Phil Nobile Jr., Mitch Horowitz, and Ryan Turek
There have been a lot of good documentaries over the last few years. Each of them seem to find the perfect topic to discuss, and present to horror fans. Many of them are interesting, informational, and even fun. “Cursed Films” can be some of those things, but it's also a lot darker. If you’re not familiar with some of the stories behind the movies, it may even be shocking but not necessarily in a good way.
The series starts by talking about “The Exorcist,” which is a good place to start because it’s considered by some as one of the scariest movies out there. Why not add to its legend by talking about some of the odd things that happened during filming like Linda getting injured, and the director firing off guns? While this one starts off talking about the film, it then turns its attention to exorcisms, and the demon in the series, Pazuzu. All interesting information, but doesn’t totally mean the film is cursed.
Next up is “Poltergeist,” another scary and creepy film. The debate is on whether or not the skeletons in the famous pool scene were real or not. There’s mention how other films also used real skeletons, which is crazy to think about. Then the first of several really sad discussions starts with the mention of the deaths of actresses Dominque Dunne and Heather O’Rourke. Dominque was murdered, and Heather passed away because of a medical condition. It’s hard listening to them talk about having no choice but to finish the film without Heather.
Then things easy up with talk about “The Omen.” There is talk about cast and crew taking planes rides that were hit by lightning, and a hotel where the director was staying being bombed. Is it being cursed, or just wrong place at the wrong time? Unfortunately there’s also mention of a beheading, which is true horror.
The series ends with two very depressing stories starting with what happened on “The Crow.” The film starred Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, who was on his way to following in his dad’s footsteps as an action movie star. Unfortunately, he followed his dad in a different way, dying in an on-set accident. The film takes a close look at how that accident happened. Like in “Poltergeist,” they wanted to stop the film, but his family knew it would mean more to Brandon if they finished it.
And finally things sadly end with a bang in “The Twilight Zone.” This is truly a horror story that unfolds on the set of a horror movie. They go slowly through the set of events that lead up to the tragic death of an actor and two children. As they talk about it, the audience can just imagine the terror that they are about to take them through. They also talk about the aftermath, and how it effected so many involved with the film.
With all the stories about the different things that happened it’s really up to the audience to decide what to believe. Yes, somethings are up for debate, while others are facts. However, does that mean the films were cursed? Being that most of these are scary horror movies it just adds to the darkness of the films. What can’t be questioned are the horrible deaths surrounding these films, and grief it caused to so many. It also shows the dangers of filmmaking, which sometimes is overlooked. If you’re a fan of any of these movies, or a fan of film, then you might enjoy going behind the scenes of these films as long as you can handle some of the sad stories. With that, I give it 3 pools of blood and look forward to a second season.
