PROMETHEUS REVIEW

  Talk about a movie that is all about expectations. For many, this is the biggest, most anticipated movie of the summer not named "Avengers," or "Dark Knight." For others like myself, definitely an important movie, but just could never get sucked into all the hype. So here are some thoughts on what I expected, and turned out seeing from "Prometheus."

  After making a big discovery on Earth, Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) are convinced that mankind isn’t alone. They set off with a crew on a space voyage to another planet. Upon landing there, they venture into structure that opens up just as many questions for them as answers, along with some unexpected danger. 

  Probably the biggest expectation from this movie is how much would it incorporate "Alien." Would it truly be a prequel, or its own movie? Well, besides one major moment, and some similarities here and there, it really is its own movie. If you go into this movie expecting to see aliens attacking people left and right like in some of the “Alien” movies, forget about it.

  “Prometheus” has an important storyline, which is all about the search for how mankind is created. Everything builds off that storyline, and every time the audience might think the movie is moving away from that, it goes right back to it. It is good to see the movie stick to this, but at times it wore on me. The more the question of our creation keeps coming up, the more I was just thinking, "answer it already and move on!"

  Move onto what... aliens of course. I guess I really was expecting, or wanting something more like "Alien." I know there would have been no originality to that, and it would have made it more like a remake than a prequel. However, after seeing some of the aliens, and action scenes, it really had me wanting more. First of all, the “creators,” “engineers,” or whatever you want to call those big, white alien guys, they are awesome. Yes, they look somewhat like overgrown humans, but there is just something interesting about them. Then there are tremendous scenes such as what happens to the two astronauts that have been left behind, and a terrific surgery scene. I could have gone for another scene or two like those instead of some of the continued creation talk that drags in some parts.

  Not only do they do an excellent job with those scenes, but also the movie is outstanding visually. The whole movie felt so real with how clean it is shot. It really feels like the audience is getting an up close tour of another planet. And this is all in 2D. I'm sure it must have been even better on IMAX.

  As far as the acting, it is a good job done by all. I didn't realize it at first, but Noomi Rapace is the actress who plays the role of Lizabeth Salander in the original "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." This is a much different role, but another excellent job of acting. Charlize Theron is solid again in her performance as Meredith Vickers, but her role isn't as big as I thought. Michael Fassbender really stole the show as the robot, David. He does a terrific job of keeping his expressions in check so that it really feels as if he is a robot.

  Now let me attempt to make a point about the end of the movie without giving it away. For those that have seen the movie, this might make more sense to you. The final scene, where I will say the audience sees “creation,” feels forced, and misplaced. Yes, it kind of caps off the whole creation talk, even though they never come to a satisfactory answer. However, it also seems kind of random being placed there. It really is a cool scene, which I'm sure some people would have liked to have seen earlier in the movie. For me, I think that scene would have been better placed after the credits. It would have made it feel more natural, and not like they threw it in because they had to tie certain things together.

  Overall, I think I got what I expected from this movie. I might have made it seem like I didn’t like it, but I did. Really, if they just threw in a little more alien action, and a little less talk, I would have been more satisfied. Some people may like the creation talk, but it didn’t hold my interest throughout the film. The movie really keeps the audience glued to it with how great it is filmed, and the acting is good. The final scene will definitely be a lasting image, wherever you think they should have placed it. Prequel, or not, I give this movie 3 pools of blood.
