MORBID COLORS REVIEW

“Morbid Colors” follows the troubled journey of Devin and Myca, two foster sisters bound by horrific pasts. When Myca returns from a months-long runaway trip with an insatiable thirst for human blood, Devin is hurled into her sister’s relentless quest to hunt down the creature responsible.

Starring: Kara Gray, Lanae Hyneman, and Cindy Maples

Written and directed by: Matthew Packman

Reading the description for “Morbid Colors” might make it seem like a revenge story, but it’s a whole lot more. It obviously starts with the two sisters, Myca (Kara Gray), and Devin (Lanae Hyneman). Each have their own struggles in life, and battle each day to find their place in the world. Devin seems to be doing a little better, at least trying to do what’s right. Unfortunately for her, she’s that one family member that sacrifices everything in their life for the people around her.
One of those people is Myca. She’s been away, and comes back trying to show people that things have changed. However, they haven’t, but it may not be her fault. Something has happened to her that will change her life forever.  She now has a thirst for blood, and revenge. Yes, she’s a vampire, but this isn’t the typical vampire story driven by finding victims. She’s more interested in revenge on the person, or creature that did this to her.
So yes, the sisters do go on a wild adventure to find the responsible party, and keep Myca need for blood under control. Finding that person/creature is a challenge, while trying to stick together as sisters is just as tough. They go through times when the want to quit on each other, and maybe even themselves, but they fight through it. It proves that while there’s plenty of horror in this story, it’s also a drama as well.
Drama follows the sisters throughout the movie, putting the challenge on Kara and Lanae to bring these sisters to life. They do a pretty good job in the extreme moments, and especially the sister vs sister theatrics. Their lives are a little depressing because of their struggles, and the movie keeps that tone from beginning to end. You could almost call say there is a ‘morbid’ feeling to it!
“Mobid Colors” proves to be a good mix of drama and horror. Before the horror, the audience is introduced to two sisters, and all of their struggles. They get to see how hard life is for them together and apart, and it becomes even harder for them once they go on their search for revenge. It’s there that the horror makes its way into the film quenching the thirst for blood of both Myca and the audience. The two main actresses drive the film with great performances leading all the way to a somewhat unexpected ending. With that I give it 3 pools of blood.

BEACHED REVIEW

‘Beached’ follows The Wail, an ancient creature from the deep, who has come to the surface to take away humanity’s pain.

Starring: Sean Godsey, Paige Klone, Jenny Austin, Deprece Raddick, Aaron Burns, and Aliza Pearl

Directed by: Nic Collins

Written by: Nic Collins and Sean Godsey

‘Beached’ was scheduled to premiere at SXSW, but unfortunately the festival was canceled due to COVID-19. While fans will have to wait to see the first 3 episodes of the series, I luckily got a chance to check out it out. I say 'luckily' because I really enjoyed it. As a matter of fact, I now can’t wait to see more from ‘The Wail!’
At first glance, the Wail is all kinds of creepy, and weird, but it turns out you can’t judge a book by its cover. The Wail couldn’t be any nicer, and only wants to do good for humanity. That’s really what episode one is all about. Paige discovers the Wail, and to the surprise of her girlfriend has brought him home. It’s an awkward situation that almost becomes disastrous if not for the world’s new superhero!
Episode two is set as another example of the Wail’s role as a hero, and the way in which he can help. Then episode three really digs in and opens a whole new universe. There’s a reporter who’s researching both good and bad stories about the Wail, and the audience is in store for several surprises! More characters, and storylines emerge as it concludes.
The Wail might be one of the most unusual looking superheroes ever! He’s almost a mix between human and whale, but his intentions are only for the good. They do a great job of setting this story up, and leaving the audience with plenty to look forward to. With ‘Beached’ being a series centered around a character looking to bring back hope to humanity, it’s odd how its premiere got pushed back due to this serious virus. There might not be a better time for the Wail to be unleashed on audiences. There’s not doubt that there’s a much bigger story coming in the future, so when this is finally released the Wail has given me hope fans will jump on 'Beached.'

TRUE TERROR WITH ROBERT ENGLUND REVIEW

Horror movie icon Robert Englund journeys into the darkest corners of America’s past to uncover stories that are as terrifying as they are real.

As horror fans, how could we not be excited to see Robert Englund on screen? No it’s not Freddy, but come on you can always imagine him talking to you as Freddy. Anyways, while it’s good to see him on T.V., this series has more to do with the tales he’s telling. Kind of think of it as him hosting a show like ‘Unsolved Mysteries,’ or even ‘Dateline.’
He does an introduction, and then dives into a story. While he starts the story, they also have experts come in, and make comments on what’s happening. It takes a little of the pressure off of him, and tries to make the story feel a little more real. So how real are the stories?
Well, supposedly these stories originate from real stories in American history. Call it more like yellow journalism, as some of these stories are clearly fake. They are fake because some of the stories involve flying creatures (dragons), and Bigfoot. Depending on your view of the paranormal, those stories might seem a little more real.
Probably one of the better stories, partly cause it comes close to being believable, is a story about a man with smallpox. They think he’s dead, so he’s put in a coffin to be taken to the graveyard. However, he’s just alive enough to make some noise, and get the attention of a lady who makes it her business to see he doesn’t get buried alive. The believability of this kind of story really makes it frighting.
Another story that turns out really weird is about a sheepherder whose wife is killed. He goes on the hunt for a creature that he hears all kinds of stories about. No spoilers here as he eventually finds something very odd! One more story of note is about a medicine man that searches out evil spirits. Apparently this creature takes human form, and the medicine man is skilled at picking it out, and killing it. Again, this one ends on a very interesting note.
Overall the stories are entertaining enough. It’s nice to see a mix of horror and America history. They have something for all kinds of fans from monsters to the paranormal, urban legends to the just plain old strange! Again some are clearly fake, but others might give you something to think about. If anything, just sit back and enjoy Freddy, I mean Robert, take you on an unique journey through American history. With that, I give season one 3 pools of blood!

TRANSFERENCE REVIEW

Joshua must protect his twin-sister, Emma, who possesses supernatural abilities and keep her safe from an unstoppable secret agent hunting them for an experiment in a classified government program.

Starring: Matthew Ninaber, Tony Nash, and Jeremy Ninaber

Directed by: Matthew Ninaber

Written by: Jennifer Lloyd, Matthew Ninaber, and Aaron Tomlin

“Transference” opens with a really horrific scene in a hospital. Yes, it takes a few minutes to set up and ultimately is a dream, but sets off the movie on a high note. Unfortunately, that’s much of the horror in the movie for awhile. Instead this becomes a sci-fi type movie. So what does that mean is in store for the audience from here on out?
Lots of confusion especially if the audience has no idea what this movie is about going into it. The audience gets that Joshua (Jeremy Ninaber) is trying to cure his sister, Emma (Melissa Joy Boerger), but what’s wrong with her? They leave a lot of mystery to that until the ending. Of course they can’t give that away early on, but maybe they should have given a few more clues earlier on. The movie is filled with too much of Joshua’s desperation to save his sister. It’s great to worry about family, but it’s a little overboard.
What really adds to the confusion are the flashbacks/dream sequences that keep popping up. Some are random while others build on top of each other. One set of flashbacks involves showing how Joshua is an underground fighter, and that’s how he makes his money. Another set of them, which are the best ones, involve a mystery man in a helmet. Apparently he’s stalking Joshua in search of his sister. It seems he’s the best tip off at what’s going on because he seems to have some kind of strength that isn’t natural.
It really isn’t until the final act that the film takes off because the confusion ends. Now the audience finds out what the story is with Emma, and it explains some of the flashbacks. It turns out that the film is very much like a superhero film just one that takes a long time revealing the heroes powers. Also, that means it ends with a battle of good and evil.
In the end, “Transference” is actually a good story, but just might not have been told in the right way. There are too many flashbacks instead of just straight story. When the story is told, it has a lot to do with Joshua’s need to protect his sister. They should have let the characters develop a little more in real time instead of jumping around. Regardless, the ending does answer many questions, and leaves the movie on an exciting note. Whether it will confuse audiences, or just me, I give movie 2 pools of blood.

THE KILLER OF GRASSY RIDGE REVIEW

Deep in the Shenandoah backcountry, a killer stalks for prey.

Starring: Heather Stone, and Michael Stumbo

A Johnny K Film

“The Killer of Grassy Ridge” opens on the ridge with a man digging a grave. As the audience gets a look at him and his surroundings, it seems clear he’s up to no good. The radio he’s listening to then mentions there have been some deaths in the area, and for everyone to stay indoors. Unfortunately, there seems to be woman also on the ridge, and calling for help. It appears like she’s calling for the wrong person to help her out.
The man grabs his ax, and makes his way out into the woods. He follows the voice until he finds the woman on the ground in front of a tree. She tells him she has hurt her ankle, and can’t get up. The woman appears at his mercy as the two come face-to-face.
“The Killer of Grassy Ridge” proves how to make a great set up. For the seasoned horror fan, they may catch what’s happening here, but it doesn’t take anything away from the film. The film takes the right pace, and shows the right glimpses of the characters before they ultimately meet. What happens between the characters might surprise some, but what’s truly surprising is how they don’t break pace, and still have a couple of shocking things for the audience as the film comes to an end. The soft creepy music playing against the silence of the forest just tops everything off. Check out this award winning film below, and find out why it still continues to be a hit at festivals!
