ANNABELLE COMES HOME REVIEW

While babysitting the daughter of Ed and Lorraine Warren, a teenager and her friend unknowingly awaken an evil spirit in a doll. Starring: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, McKenna Grace, Madison Iseman, and Katie Sarife Directed by: Gary Dauberman Written by: James Wan, and Gary Dauberman   It was like love at first fright when Annabelle debuted in “ The Conjuring .” I just knew fans needed more of her, and we’ve had more of her than I could’ve ever imagined. However, some of that love disappeared by the end of “ Annabelle Creation ” because it really sunk in that Annabelle would never be like Chucky. She draws the evil out, but never is going to be more than a creepy looking doll.    That’s made clear when “Annabelle Comes Home” begins with the Warren couple trying to bring Annabelle home. Evil spirits are drawn to her in a great scene that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. As quickly as the Warren’s make an appearance, they’re off leaving th...

THE NUN REVIEW

A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun. Starring: Demian Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, and Jonas Bloquet Directed by: Corin Hardy Written by: Gary Doberman, and James Wan   “Insidious” seemed to set a new era of scares, and paved the way for The Conjuring Universe.  A whole universe that’s built on scares, but the scares seem to be getting less effective as they go. It doesn’t help that what might be the best scares of the movie are given away in the trailer. Will it be any different in “The Nun?”   Another problem with these movies is that it takes so long for them to get anywhere important. It almost seems like they make it drag just so that the scares wake the audience up. Father Burke (Demian Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) go to the Abbey to investigate the recen...

LIGHTS OUT REVIEW

When her little brother, Martin, experiences the same events that once tested her sanity, Rebecca works to unlock the truth behind the terror, which brings her face to face with an entity that has an attachment to their mother, Sophie. Starring: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, and Maria Bello Directed by: David F. Sandberg Written by: Eric Heisserer, and David F. Sandberg   For those who might not know, “Lights Out” was originally a short film . The short film went viral on the internet, the right people saw it (James Wan), and then production began on the feature film version. Being a promoter of horror, it’s awesome to see so much success for a short film. Being a horror movie reviewer, the question is if the feature film can be as successful.   To start, the short film basically introduces audiences to the entity, and how it behaves when the lights go on and off. The feature film expands on this, and gives the entity and the people it haunts a story...

INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 REVIEW

The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. Starring: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey, Lin Shayne, Ty Simpkins, and Steve Coulter Directed by: James Wan Written by: Leigh Whannell, and James Wan   When the news hit, it was disappointing to hear that there would be a sequel to “Insidious.” It has its flaws, but is one of the scarier movies of the past few years. A sequel just didn’t feel necessary even with a few unanswered questions left at the end of it. However, when a horror movie makes money, a sequel is sure to follow (see you soon “The Conjuring 2”). So does “Insidious: Chapter 2” prove to be a worthy sequel?   In a much-appreciated move, Chapter 2 picks up shortly after the events of chapter 1 instead of years later. Actually it begins with what appears to be a random flashback to when Josh (Patrick Wilson) is a child, but later becomes ...

THE CONJURING REVIEW

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Forced to confront powerful entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives. Starring: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston, and Lili Taylor Directed by: James Wan Written by: Chad Hayes, and Carey Hayes   It’s easy to scare the average movie fan, but when you hear hardcore horror fans talk about how scary “The Conjuring” is it sets the bar high. Not that the bar wasn’t high enough for James Wan after “Insidious,” a movie that actually had me jumping out of my seat. On top of that, throw in talks of “The Conjuring 2” before this one is even released. That is just crazy! So does the “The Conjuring” live up to the high expectations?   Well it really didn’t take long to meet those expectations. How could it do it so fast? The answer… Annabelle. The movie opens about two years before the e...
