AN ENGLISH HAUNTING REVIEW

In 1960s England, Blake Cunningham and his alcoholic mother are forced to move into the mysterious Clemonte Hall, a vast isolated manor house, to care for his dying Grandfather who resides in the attic room. Soon, ghostly goings-on fill the house with dread, as it becomes apparent Grandfather’s illness may have a supernatural cause that can only be cured by uncovering the terrifying secrets of the house and its dark history.

Starring: David Lenik, Tessa Wood, and Barrington De La Roche

Directed and written by: Charlie Steeds

It’s always tough caring for a loved one, and maybe even more for one you haven’t seen in a while. Blake (David Lenik) and his mother Margot (Tessa Wood) end up doing just that when they have to move into Clemonte Hall. They end up tasked with having to take care of his sick grandfather (Barrington De La Roche). A manor like the one in "An English Haunting" is bound to have secrets, and they’re about to be discovered.
Blake seems to care a little more about his grandfather’s health than his mother. Maybe that’s why he starts to have dreams about his grandfather, and even a few other people. These dreams happen several times, and are definitely strange. They’re also clues to what’s really going on here, and even produce a scare or two. One of the best scares happens during his first dream.
Besides the dreams, Blake also gets clues from a recorder that plays by itself. At first both Blake and the audience might think this is a simple haunting, but there’s something else at play. Blake works to figure this out as his mother prefers to drink. She finally decides to help, but only when she’s convinced that Blake might be in danger.
Before the final act, most of the movie has been mystery and some hauntings. The ending finally picks up the pace, and gets some action going. The reason everything has happened is revealed, and it's not good for anyone in this house. Without giving away the payoff, lets just say it’s a little odd, but all the pieces of the puzzle are there.
“An English Haunting” might get off to a slow start, but makes up for it in the end. Early on it’s about the mystery, and figuring out what the dreams and hauntings mean. The dreams and hauntings also provide a scare or two mostly from a peculiar character. Behind it all is a good story that comes to a satisfying ending. With that, I give it 2.5 pools of blood.
