“Orphan: First Kill” brings back the child who really isn’t a child. Her story begins at a psychiatric facility, where she's one of several dangerous patients. This orphan isn’t going to wait for an adoption, as she makes her way out of the facility, and into an unlucky visitor’s car. She makes short work of them, and plans her next move.
She knows she needs a new identity, and finds one in a missing girl named… Ester (Isabelle Fuhrman)! The new Ester finds her way back to her family for a big reunion. The family works to get her settled in, but Ester has nothing good on her mind. Of course she’s going to get into some trouble, and put her plan in jeopardy. However, she’s going to have a big surprise waiting for her that changes everything.
It’s good to see Ester back again, and fans won’t have to wait long to be reminded of what she’s capable of. Opening in the facility jumpstarts the film, as the audience sees Ester plotting a way out, and getting rid of anyone in her way. She’s never afraid to get her hands bloody, and the audience will get to see that a couple of times. The most intriguing thing fans will learn about her is how she got her name, and the idea to play the role of a little girl.
Playing the role of a little girl was the big twist in “Orphan.” It would be hard to imagine this prequel pulling off a bigger surprise, but their twist isn’t too bad. It comes a lot earlier than in the original, and sets up a very interesting second half of the film. It definitely amps up the level of craziness for the entire family.
While horror fans are subjected to so many remakes, and unnecessary sequels its good to see a prequel every once in awhile. It’s nice when audiences can learn something new about characters like how Ester got her name, and started pretending to be a young girl. Fans already know she’s nuts, and will be reminded of that often. They’ll see how she carried some of what she learns here into the original movie, and how unsuccessful her plans turn out in both cases. While the original’s twist was going to be nearly impossible to beat, “Orphan: First Kill” builds nicely off a twist of their own, and earns 3.5 pools of blood!
