COLOR OUT OF SPACE REVIEW

A secluded farm is struck by a strange meteorite which has apocalyptic consequences for the family living there and possibly the world.

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson, and Madeleine Arthur

Directed by: Richard Stanley

Written by: H.P. Lovecraft, Richard Stanley, and Scarlett Amaris

Nicolas Cage continues to take on some strange movies and play some odd characters, and that is no different in “Color Out of Space.” Here he plays Nathan, who has retired to a farm and found himself busy raising alpacas. He’s joined there by his wife Theresa (Joely Richardson) and three curious kids. Everything is fine until a bright pinkish and purple light blazes through the sky, and something appears to land in their yard. It’s a good sized meteorite that just looks like a big rock. No harm in that right?
After all the excitement passes the family tries to get back to normal. They sit down at night and watch Nathan embarrass himself in a news interview about the crash. Theresa is so busy fixing dinner that she fails to hear his repeated calls for her to come watch the interview. He asks Jack (Julian Hilliard) to get his mother, and when he snaps her out of her trance a terrible accident occurs. Mom and dad are forced to go to the hospital leaving the kids alone when things begin to get weird.
There are a few things that anyone can say make this film stand out, but probably the most is the color. From the first time the audience experiences it to all the way at the end it has a presence. It creates some great images, especially as the movie hits its final scenes. In a way, it’s very different to have so much light in the darkest moments of a horror movie. People in the movie seem glued to it at times, and it very much does that to the audience as well.
The color also goes well on the creatures, and monsters. There are more simple things like pinkish insects, and an angry looking cat. Then there are the alpacas. Already a little odd looking to begin with, they’re about to get a big makeover. That’s pretty crazy in itself, but there’s something even wilder to see. Lets leave it at some family bonding is about to take place. The color, creatures, and music paint a beautiful picture of doom for the farm, and maybe beyond.
The Gardner family definitely loves each other, but as individuals they’re a little odd. Being a little different adds a nice touch of humor to what soon becomes a horrific situation. A meteorite has unfortunately crashed on their farmer, and soon enough begins changing some of the people, and animals. A bright pinkish purple color takes over the background, while creatures reminiscent of “The Thing” will leave the audience with something to talk about. Dare to say Lovecraft type films aren’t usually my thing, but “Color Out of Space” managed to get a glowing 3.5 pools of blood!
