A Fantasia International Film Festival Review

Surely there has come a time when you started with something like, “Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It.” Dastan hasn’t said it yet, but by the end of this one he sure will, and for good reason! With his wife inching closer to giving birth, he’s become stressed out, and in need of some space from her nagging. He calls his best friends Arman and Murat to go fishing with him, even though they’ve never gone before. Arman and Murat aren't sure Dastan will make it into the van, but he does regardless of his wife's yelling.

The three definitely don’t seem like the outdoors types, and it won’t take long to prove it. It isn’t easy for them, but they somehow manage to get on floating devices, not meant for a stream, and do their version of fishing. If this is hard, things are about to get a lot harder for them when they accidentally sneak up on a gang trying to get information from someone. Unfortunately for them, the gang is about as good at kidnapping as the friends are at fishing. Things go wrong, and the group ends up witnessing a murder, and then on the run from the gang!

To start, this is another movie that shines because it puts a group of friends in an awkward situation that they can’t handle. Dastan and friends can barely make it through regular life nonetheless running for their lives. Every time they think plan A is going to work they soon realize they may need a plan B, or even C. Their expressions are priceless each time they manage to somehow escape death.

While largely a comedy escaping death isn’t going to be easy for anyone here. No, the gang isn’t as big of a problem as the audience might think. Instead, there’s a madman also lurking in this secluded area, and he’s ready to kill everyone in sight. He’s not just about shooting people like the gang. When he kills someone, he’s slicing and dicing them up leaving everyone else throwing up at the victims. He has no fear in anyone he fights especially in an awesome fight scene at the end where he’s just throwing people around, and letting objects bounce off of him.

“Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It” starts with a situation many people can relate to. Sometimes people just need a break, and Dastan is that person here. Of course going on a fishing trip could’ve meant other things, but this group actually goes fishing. Unfortunately they run into a gang, a serial killer, and some other odd characters, and aren’t prepared to deal with the dangers each possess. The fun is watching them take their bumps and bruises, and somehow make it onto the next crazy situation. There will be plenty of laughs, but also some great action and deaths to top it off. Sweetie, you won’t believe it but I’m giving this film 4 pools of blood!
